Everything you want to know about Burgau, Algarve

Updated: Aug 26

I just want to highlight one of my favorite beach towns because this place deserves it! Burgau is a beautiful tiny fishing village situated about 10 kilometers from Lagos just next to Praia da Luz and about an hour drive away from Faro Airport.

Burgau, Algarve, Portugal
Burgau, Algarve

It's the perfect place to stay if you love the more wild nature from the western Algarve but enjoy the facilities of a slightly (just a tiny bit) touristy beach town. With not many, but some really good and cute (beach) bars and restaurants and 2 small supermarkets, this place is perfect if you like to escape crowds and enjoy nature with the comfort of close by facilities.

Burgau is perfect if you love beaches and beautiful nature. The more west you go, the wilder nature gets. In eastern direction you'll find the bigger town of Praia da Luz with all the conveniences of larger (still not big) beach resort. Here you will find a wide range of restaurants, large super markets and a few cute shops. The surfers town of Sagres is just a 20 minute drive west from Burgau and so worth checking out.

The small village centre of Burgau is characterized by its cute steep cobbled streets, blossoming bougainvillea and bright colored townhouses.

The village has spread out from the old centre a little bit with a few new holiday accommodations but all buildings and houses are still mostly low rise. The steep town centre streets take you straight to the beautiful main beach, Praia do Burgau. A white sandy cove situated on the clear blue Atlantic and its white washed houses leaning crookedly against each other up the hilly landscape, make this place a true gem!

The best time to visit Burgau

I would recommend staying here anywhere between March and November. Winter can be (a little too) quiet and tranquil in the town and most cafe's and restaurants are usually closed. However the weather in winter is still great. Enjoy your morning bica (espresso) under the Algarve sun whilst watching the surfers walking down the cobbled streets into ocean.

Summer can be busy and (in my opinion) a little too touristy. That's why spring and fall are perfect for traveling to the Algarve. The weather is beautiful, everything is open and there are not to many crowds.

Burgau is perfect if you're into outdoor activities like hiking (there are some beautiful hikes around!), supping, surfing, climbing and coasteering. You will also find many cute fishing villages around to visit like Salema, Sagres and Praia da Luz. The Larger town of Lagos and it's beautiful Ponta de Piedade is also definitely worth visiting!
