That said, the “best” time really depends on what you want from your trip. Below is a clear breakdown by season, interests, and month. Let me tell you more about all the seasons in the Algarve and why!

April

April is incredibly green and beautiful. The weather can be a little unpredictable, but most days are warm enough for t-shirts, outdoor activities, and even beach time.

  • Ocean is cold (refreshing rather than relaxing 😉)

  • Bring layers: bikini and jumper

  • Evenings and mornings can be chilly

  • Sheltered beaches like Praia dos Três Irmãos work best

Average temperature: 18–21°C (warmer during the day)

May (my top pick)

In my opinion, May has the best weather of the year. It’s warm, sunny, and perfect for the beach — without summer crowds.

  • Still green landscapes

  • Ideal balance of tourists and local life

  • Great atmosphere in towns, cafés, and restaurants

Average temperature: 22–24°C (often feels warmer)

June

June is a fantastic early-summer month.

  • Long sunny days

  • Warm beach weather without peak-season crowds

  • Perfect evenings for outdoor dining and drinks under palm trees

Average temperature: ~25°C

September

September is a favorite for many — and for good reason.

  • Summer crowds are gone

  • Sea is at its warmest (around 20°C)

  • Still full beach weather

  • Bougainvillea in full bloom

Average temperature: ~27°C

October

October is ideal if you want to escape Northern European autumn.

  • Warm days, cooler nights

  • Beautiful starry skies and moonrises

  • Great surf conditions

  • Peaceful but still lively enough

This might actually be my personal favorite month.

Average temperature: ~23°C
