The most fun activities with kids in Carvoeiro: my personal tips!

Carvoeiro, and the Algarve in general, is an amazing holiday destination for families with children. Together with southern Spain, it has the sunniest climate in Europe, making it a great place to visit all year round. The cool sea breeze from the Atlantic Ocean also makes it a lovely spot during the summer holidays.
Are you planning a family holiday to Carvoeiro in the Algarve? Then I'm happy to share my personal tips. I've been coming here since I was little, and these days I spend several weeks (sometimes months!) a year here with my own family. Here are my favourite activities for kids in Carvoeiro!
Happy kids = relaxed parents: the best activities for kids in Carvoeiro!
The charm of Carvoeiro is that everything here is just a little more laid-back and small-scale, without anything being missing. There's plenty to keep the kids entertained, while you can still enjoy your coffee or linger over a long lunch without any stress.
Start the day right: coffee at the playground with sea views
Start your morning at Praia do Carvoeiro, up at the viewpoint. There's a new playground with a pirate ship (my toddlers is obsessed). It's perfect for little ones: easy to oversee, safe and relaxed. I usually grab a coffee at Chefs Cafe (down in the village) and enjoy it while the kids play. Tip: bring some beach tooys because the beach at Carvoeiro is just a few minutes' walk away.
Shell searching at stunning Algarve beaches
The coastline between Carvoeiro and Benagil is a paradise for little beach explorers. Praia da Marinha is not only known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but it's also perfect for hunting shells and pebbles in the morning. At low tide you'll find real treasures, and along the way there are some mini caves to discover.
Rent a house with a pool in Carvoeiro
With kids, a holiday home with a pool is absolutely worth it. In Carvoeiro you'll find plenty of villas and apartments with a private pool or a shared one where there's usually another family around. A quick dip between breakfast and lunch, or a splash after dinner is so much more relaxed than a packed hotel.
Slide & Splash water park: a classic day out for kids
A classic (not my personal favourite, but definitely the kids'!). Slide & Splash is a 10-minute drive away and makes for a brilliant day out near Carvoeiro. For little water lovers there are kids' zones with mini slides and shallow pools, and for older kids (and parents) there are big exciting slides and lazy rivers. Everything is well maintained, there's plenty of shade and enough food stalls to keep everyone going. Good to know: the water is unheated, as you probably expected. So you might want to save this activity for the really really hot days!
Dolphin tour or cave exploring by boat
One of the most popular activities for kids in Carvoeiro is a boat trip to the Benagil Caves. Daily departures leave from Carvoeiro and Benagil. The caves are truly spectacular and feel magical for children. You sail into the rock formations in small boats, like something out of a fairy tale. And with a bit of luck you might spot dolphins along the way. Make sure you book in advance and put on plenty of sunscreen, because out on the water you burn faster than you'd think.
The best family-friendly beaches near Carvoeiro
Finding the right beach makes a big difference when you're travelling with kids. Here are my top picks:
Praia do Carvoeiro is compact, easy to manage and right next to the village, so you can walk straight to the ice cream parlour. Note that in summer parking can get busy.
Praia do Vale Centeanes is a little wilder, but it has a beach bar, toilets and a few natural shady spots against the rocks.
Praia da Marinha is perfect for adventurous kids who love to climb and explore. Just be aware that this beach is not easily accessible with a pushchair.

More fun activities for kids near Carvoeiro (among which my personal fave!)
Visit a donkey farm (my personal favourite)
In Paderne (about half an hour drive) you'll find Donkey Tours Algarve. You can ride donkeys through the orange groves, brush them and more! The tour ends with delicious local treats and a cold glass of wine for the grown-ups. It's litterly so fun for the whole family! A must-do activity in the Algarve!
Surf lessons for the whole family
The Algarve has amazing surf, especially in the winter months and shoulder season. Heading into summer you'll often find smaller waves that are great for beginners. Surf schools offer family lessons, and even children from age six can join in. A great way for them to burn off energy and do something fun together as a family! In Portimão, about 20 minutes away, there's a lovely surf beach with several great surf schools.
Where to eat in (and around) Carvoeiro with kids: you enjoy dinner, they enjoy playing
One of the things I love most about Carvoeiro is that there are loads of restaurants where kids can roam freely while you actually relax. Here are my favourites:
Club Nau (Ferragudo) is right on the beach, feet in the sand and live music in the evening. The kids can literally play on the beach while you sip your rosé. Perfect for a relaxed lunch or a sundowner.
Vila Vita Biergarten (Porches) — okay, I know, a Biergarten in the Algarve? Yes, really, and it's genuinely a lot of fun! Lots of space, friendly staff and a separate playground. The currywurst with fries is usually a hit with the kids.
LightHouse Bar & Grill (Carvoeiro) has a relaxed vibe, great burgers, pizzas and salads. Inside there's a little play corner that's perfect if you have younger children, and outside you can sit on the terrace with truly beautiful views.
Quinta Oliveira is a small restaurant just outside the centre, with a big garden where the kids can run around while you eat in peace. Nice and quiet, friendly service, and in the evening it's lovely and atmospheric with fairy lights in the trees.
Carvoeiro with kids: everything you need in one place
Carvoeiro is truly a dream destination for families: small and easy to get around, but with everything you need close by. From shell hunting and boat trips to petting donkeys and water park slides, every day here looks different. And the best part? You get to enjoy it too. Whether that's over a coffee on a terrace with sea views, a dip in your own pool, or a dinner with sand between your toes.
