Whether you need a car in the Algarve completely depends on what kind of trip you’re planning and what you want to get out of it.
In general, I would definitely recommend renting a car. The Algarve is a wide region, towns and beaches can be far apart, and public transport coverage is limited, especially outside the main tourist hubs.
That said, you don’t always need a car. Below I’ll explain when you do, when you don’t, and what to expect if you decide to drive.
When you definitely do need a car in the Algarve
If you want to really explore the Algarve, renting a car is the best choice.
You’ll need a car if you want to:
Discover hidden beaches
Explore the wild West Coast
Visit the Alentejo region
Visit several beach towns
Avoid relying on limited bus and train schedules
Many of the Algarve’s most beautiful spots are not accessible by public transport. Some beaches, viewpoints, and coastal trails can only be reached by car.
If freedom and flexibility are important to you, rent a car.
When you don’t need a car in the Algarve
If you’re planning to stay at one specific beach resort or town and mainly want to relax, eat out, and take the occasional short trip, you’ll be fine without a car.
For example:
Staying in one town like Lagos, Albufeira, or Faro
Mostly visiting restaurants, beaches, and shops nearby
Only taking short trips for dinner or sightseeing
In these cases, Uber and taxis work perfectly.
Uber is widely available in the Algarve and prices are much lower than in Northern Europe, the US, or Canada. For short distances, it’s often more convenient (and stress-free) than renting a car.

Is driving easy in the Algarve?
Yes — driving in the Algarve is generally easy, especially compared to many other European destinations.
From my experience:
Portuguese drivers are mellow and relaxed
Highways are quiet and well maintained
Traffic outside peak summer months is very manageable
The only places to be extra careful are small town centers, such as:
Lagos
Faro
Old historic villages
Streets can be very narrow, and it’s common to see scratches on cars and paint marks on walls from tight turns and parking. Take it slow and you’ll be fine.
Apart from that, driving is straightforward and stress-free.
Best car rental companies at Faro Airport (based on experience)
I’ve been renting cars in the Algarve for over 15 years, around five times a year, so I’ve done plenty of research on where to rent, especially at Faro Airport.
Here are my favorite car rental companies, based on reliability and reviews on Discover Cars:
Recommended Car Rental Companies
Guerin⭐ Discover Cars rating: 9.2
CAEL⭐ Discover Cars rating: 9.2
FireFly⭐ Discover Cars rating: 7.7
Hertz⭐ Discover Cars rating: 8.9
Dollar⭐ Discover Cars rating: 8.4
